This program is a continuation of the efforts begun by the Southwest Indian Agricultural Association, Inc (SWIAA) in 2023 to coordinate with USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) and local partners to enhance animal disease preparedness and response on Tribal lands.
APHIS will prioritize the funding of proposals that focus on the prevention and response to disease outbreaks in Native cattle ranches. Leveraging existing resources through partnerships with local, state, and/or federal government agencies, Native American Tribal governments, Native American Tribal organizations, Native American colleges & universities, and other related organizations to prevent disease outbreaks based on scientifically based innovation and existing tools.
Our program will develop and deliver training & exercises to improve animal disease outbreak response capabilities and educate Native ranchers on various methods of maintaining biosecurity measures for their cattle and poultry.
