Water/Wastewater Technical Assistance and Training Program
The Painted Desert Development Project, Inc., also known as STAR School, is located outside the Southwest end of the Navajo Nation. Established in 2001, the STAR School has served its predominantly Native American student body as well as the neighboring Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe communities by dealing with issues related to water security and quality.
In partnership with AATech, the STAR School has been awarded the Technical Assistance and Training grant by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Rural Development Utility Program. For the fifth year in a row, STAR School and AATech will work to improve issues of water scarcity and quality through development of a decentralized off-grid water treatment system.
Objective 1: Identify and evaluate solutions to water problems on Navajo and Hopi Reservations relating to source, storage, treatment, or distribution.
Objective 2: Identify and evaluate solutions to wastewater problems on Navajo and Hopi Reservations relating to collection, treatment, or disposal.
Objective 3: Attract additional Federal, State, and private funding to implement the solutions to water/wastewater problems by assisting Native American individuals and groups with the preparation of water and/or waste disposal loan and/or grant applications.
Objective 4: Provide direct technical assistance and/or training to STAR School personnel that will improve the management, operation and maintenance of water and waste disposal facilities in Navajo and Hopi communities that lack running water, flush toilets, and modern sewage disposal systems, and areas which have open sewers and high rates of disease caused by poor sanitation.
Objective 5: Provide outreach and public education to raise personal and public awareness of the importance of water safety and security.
Objective 6: Provide funding to cover the expenses associated with providing technical assistance and/or training authorized.
